Hillwalkers left sickened after poachers leave deer remains on walking path

By WicklowNews.net,

Hillwalkers have been left sickened after poachers left deer remains on a popular walking path.

The discovery was made by hillwalkers last Wednesday morning when they set out for a walk up Croghan from Ballykilagear close to Ballycoogue.

One hillwalker said "They were shot over night because we only walked up the hill on Tuesday evening and they were not there then."

Heads and legs of young deer which had been hacked from their body were dumped at the entry of the walk.

A legitimate deer hunter who inspected the remains told Wicklownews.net "These are young deer which are being shot out of season and also during the night which is illegal."

"It is this type of action that give deer hunters a bad name, what we have here are calves and hinds and the season for shooting them is not until the 1st of November.

Similar incidents have also been reported in the Asknagap and Aughavanagh area.

Deer hunters do have a bad name and how the half of them get a license is beyond me. I do agree Mary the pictures are graphic but need to be shown, if it was a picture with just a deer looking lovely in the field I doubt there would have been even a comment ...

I agree with Hunter hater..... I am an animal lover and am so mad with what these deer hunters are doing. How would they like someone to hunt their family and kill them. They have no hearts at all it's so cruel. Unfortunetley Hunter hater hit the nail on the head, these pictures have to be shown like this to make people notice what exactly is happening, someone has to stand up for these poor defensless creatures. I am sure these are not the only animals these hunters kill. These hunters are not human!

The images are needed to highlight this problem. Wardens needed to keep a watchful eye on poachers.

I go hill walking all over Ireland and this is becoming more noticeable. The deerhunters (As they like to call themselves) don't care what they shoot Badgers, Foxes even dogs. I have encountered all these on my walks. As for wardens you will find they have a license to kill deer too. I have found that most hunters are ignorant and arrogant and have to agree with Hunter hater . How do some of these people get a licence . As for showing the pictures this is mild to what I have witnessed ....

The killing of deers stir up emotions and these people obviously have no respect for animals but doesn't the mass production of pigs, cows, chickens, etc display an even greater disregard for animal welfare. Why is the hunter quoted above being picked on? If he isn't a threat to the deer population and he eats his prey, surely he represents a way of life that respects animals more than modern-day consumerism

The problem ye all have is that ye don't understand , nor want to under stand hunting and what hunters do to make sure these breeds stay in gud populations . With out hunters most of the birds and animals ye enjoy would not be here ! Gud clubs let out phesents in the hundreds ! Yes we hunt them be only males and for ever male let out there is a female, ye think these birds would survive with out gun clubs culling magpies minks foxs etc . Or the hard winters we have had ! As for you Deer , don't mistake hunter with poacher , a hunter take what he needs, and culls for farmers or on report of an injured animal . If these animals were not kept in cheque , they would over populate die from starvation and before that be responsible for more road traffic accidents then people can imagine . Your attitude would soon change if a love one didn make it home one night because of a collision with a deer on the road . Ye need to open your eyes to the way life works . Try to understand that we're not cold hearted killers but animal lovers too , I've passed up many shoot opportunitys to admire an animal in it habitat .

Im worried to think people can use the word 'hate' so easily!. To hate someone based on their personal beliefs is not normal. Maybe hunter haters should retract their statement and keep their personal opions personal. It bothers me to think what people like this would do if they did hold firearms. Stick to your hate mail, less damaging! And to the people that can understand and are more educated, i totally disagree with this type of activity, shame on them:-(

i just realised something it says found by poachers how do they know when the deer was shot was there lab inspected to see when time of death was and they did say they were up there the morning before they were not there then but they were not out walking all day they coul be dropped off there by hunters shooting on that land right next door to that area and yes female are out of season but there is a special licence hunters can obtain called a section 42 which states male and female can be culled for damage to farmers lands

im a hunter from wicklow where ive lived all my life,i hunt and shoot deer, pheasant rabbit etc,i control vermin for farmers and poultry producers as well, the people that shot these deer are pouchers not hunters,so understand this a hunter that is licenced more than likely did not do this,as no hunter leaves behind an deer like that, hunter haters you can have your views but dont carry on like you know any thing about hunting, these pictures are not pictures of hunting or the work of a hunter,im out raged at what these so called hunters have done and if thay ware found thay should be takin up for it

get a life Lis, your bantering on about something you clearly know nothing about, yes this is a horrible way to leave an animal, and i,ve no doubt it was poacher/thieves who did it, but you need to take off the blinkers your wearing and stop tarring every hunter with your biased views! you probably had a rasher sandwich before you came out this morning with no regard for the unfortunate pig it came from! your type have this country the way it is, run by idiots, ps i,m ahunter too!

Well said Paul, John Mike,Leonard, Remember- the most violent element of society is ignorance!! Hunting is a huge part of our society. An age old tradition that will survive forever. Poaching is the thieves way of gaining from the sport. They dont care about the animal or the legacy they leave behind. I have went to and will continue to go to great lengths to stop poaching. As for all the apparent "animal lovers" I have nothing to say to you as it is impossible to defeat an ignorant person in argument
