Wicklow lose out to Westmeath

Wicklow 2-7 Westmeath 4-14

Wicklow lost their first home game of the season in Greystones this afternoon against Intermediate all-Ireland winners Westmeath.

Wicklow started brightly with Loretta Gilbert and Lucy Mulhall chalking up the opening points, the opening twenty minutes were all Wicklow, Meadhbh Deeney scored a wonderful solo goal giving Wicklow a 1-4 to 3 points lead as the game approched half-time but rather than spur Wicklow on Westmeath started to run riot. Scoring a goal and three points inside 4 minutes.

Wicklow suffered a blow in the opening minute of the second half when they lost the influential Jackie Kinch to a back injury, Westmeath now aided with the slight breeze launched a wave of attacks and put the new look Wicklow defence under immense pressure.

Lucy Mulhall and Laurie Ahern added futher points in the second half with Meabhdh Deeney scoring a late penalty.

The Wicklow management won't be too disappointed as a lot of new girls got a run out with Claire and Aife Kavanagh, Claire Walsh having a good game.

Scorers Lucy Mulhall 5 points, Meadhbh Deeney 2 goals (1,pen), Loretta Gilbert 1 point and Laurie Ahern 1 point.

Wicklow's next outing will be home to Down at Blessington next Sunday 2pm.
