Winning Scor for Carnew
There were wild scenes of celebration in Carnew on Sunday night as the Carnew Emmet’s Scor-na-nÓg team returned from Castlebar with an All-Ireland trophy.
Bob Fitzgerald, Nathan O'Connor, Paul Murphy, Conor Lambert, Pádraig Doran, Seamus Mulhall, Toni Doran and Anna Hennessy were among the cast that won the 'Novelty Act' competition which was held in the Royal Theatre & Events Centre, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
The act compares the emigration to Australia of today’s young GAA players with the time of the wild colonial boy Jack Duggan. It stress the differences that our youth of today are better educated, will find better jobs and most importantly will return when things improve here at home.
It is based on an idea of James Doran who developed it from an idea that surfaced during a recent visit from his Australian cousins. Written by Etty Kilbride and produced and directed by both James and Etty.
Scor is an annual competition organized by the GAA to showcase the cultural side of the organization. There are competitions in Irish dancing, singing, music dance, recitation, a question time and for a novelty act.
No stranger to the Novelty Act competition, this win for Carnew Emmet’s makes them five time All-Ireland Champions. They have won the senior competition, Scor Sinsear three times the last being in 2011 and Scor na nÓg in 2007. These latest set of medals add up to an impressive 40 All-Ireland Scor medals for the club.
They have competed in twelve All-Ireland finals in as many years, having won 12 Leinster finals between both the juvenile and the senior competitions.
