Wicklow students happy with results
Overall Wicklow students were happy with their leaving cert results.
Most students around the county were happy with their leaving cert results yesterday, while most students opened the results straight away many were just too nervous and said they would go home and open the results with their families.
Tense dad Johnny Corkish waited outside the Dominican college in Wicklow while daughter Emily went to collect her results, but there were no worries as Emily rushed out of the school like she had scored the winning goal in the cup final.
Rachal Flynn from East Glendalough school in Wicklow said she was very satisfied with her results.
Principal of East Glendalough Alan Cox said " It's a little hard for the students to get excited because they now have to wait until Monday to see if they have enough points to see where they go from here, the system is not great."
Benji Levai from Avondale Community College was delighted with his 600 points, he said he thought he had done OK but never expected 600 points.
Parenting coach Marianne Byrne speaking on East Coast FM's Morning Show on Wednesday said "Not all students may have achieved their goal, but there is help available on line at the "Heads Up" website or the helpline run by the Department of Education and the Irish Independent on phone 1800 265 165.
Councillor Gráinne Mc Loughln urges new students to APPLY FOR GRANTS NOW
Fine Gael Councillor Gráinne Mc Loughlin is urging all new local students, who may be eligible, to apply for their third level grants as soon as possible. The student grant system has been reformed and a unified application process will be implemented by one body, Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI).
“SUSI will replace the 33 VECs and 33 local authority bodies currently processing applications, so new students should apply for their grant though SUSI,” Gráinne explained. “Students seeking financial assistance can apply now, regardless of whether they have chosen a college course yet.
“This is a phased scheme, so it is important to point out that students already in receipt of a grant and who are progressing to the next year of their course will continue to be assessed and paid by the existing awarding authorities. However, if you are changing your course or progressing onto a new course, you should apply to SUSI,” he/she advised.
Students or parents with queries on the application process can contact the SUSI Support Desk on 0761-08-7874 or by email at support@susi.cdvec.ie. Further information can be accessed on www.studentfinance.ie.
